Two documents come up again and again when buying chemicals. They are often confused, but they do different jobs.
Certificate of analysis (COA)
A COA belongs to one batch. It lists the test results for that batch — assay, impurities, moisture and so on — against the specification. QC laboratories and auditors use it to show the material met its grade.
Material safety data sheet (MSDS / SDS)
An MSDS belongs to the chemical, not the batch. It covers hazards, safe handling, storage, first aid and disposal. Every hazardous chemical in your lab should have one on file.
When to ask
Ask for a COA with any chemical used in analysis, QC or a regulated process. Ask for an MSDS with anything hazardous, the first time you order it. We supply both on request.
